Switches and keycaps are sold separately so you can pick exactly what you want. Some premium kits also include foam layers, carrying cases, and extra plates in different materials. Beginner-friendly kits feature hot-swap PCBs so no soldering is required. Brands like Keychron, KBDfans, and QwertyKeys offer well-documented kits with easy assembly. A gasket-mount 65% or 75% kit in the $100-$150 range is the sweet spot for a first build: enough space for daily use, premium typing feel, and a straightforward build process that takes under 30 minutes.
Gasket mount vs tray mount vs top mount kits
