Hot-Swap QMK Keyboards
A hot-swap QMK keyboard gives you the best of both worlds: tool-free switch changes and full firmware programmability. How Hot-Swap Sockets Work
Hot-swap sockets use spring-loaded contacts that grip switch pins when inserted and release them when pulled out. This eliminates the need for soldering. Most modern hot-swap sockets support both 3-pin and 5-pin MX-style switches. To swap switches, use a switch puller to remove the old ones and press new switches firmly into the sockets.

Hot-swap is the recommended starting point for anyone entering the custom keyboard hobby. You can experiment with different switch types to discover your preferences without committing to a soldered build. Start with a hot-swap board, try a few switch options, and refine your ideal typing feel over time.
3-Pin vs 5-Pin Hot-Swap Compatibility
Hot-swap sockets come in 3-pin and 5-pin configurations. 5-pin sockets accept both 3-pin and 5-pin switches, providing the widest compatibility. 3-pin sockets only accept 3-pin switches, but you can clip the two extra plastic legs from a 5-pin switch to make it fit. When buying a hot-swap keyboard, 5-pin support is preferred.

Hot-swap sockets are available on virtually every keyboard layout from 40% through full-size. The feature is standard on most custom keyboard kits and increasingly common on pre-built boards. Whether you want a compact 65% daily driver or a full-size office board, hot-swap options exist across every form factor.
