What materials are used in the construction of the Kronos60 keyboard?

The Kronos60 keyboard features a clear 'frosted' polycarbonate chassis combined with an internal brass through-weight. This combination not only provides a unique aesthetic inspired by Saturn but also contributes to a solid and premium feel while typing.

How does the Kronos60 achieve its distinctive lighting effect?

The keyboard utilizes a sandblasted polycarbonate chassis paired with RGB underglow LEDs on the PCB. The diffused light softly illuminates the uniform bezels, creating an ambient glow that enhances the visual appeal without being overpowering.

Can I customize the switches on the Kronos60 keyboard?

Yes, the Kronos60 is equipped with a hot-swappable PCB designed by Gondolindrim, allowing you to easily swap out switches without soldering. This makes it convenient to try different switch types and customize your typing experience.

What is the mounting style of the Kronos60 keyboard, and how does it affect typing feel?

The keyboard uses a gummy O-ring mounting system with 50A durometer O-rings included. This mounting style provides a cushioned typing experience by reducing vibrations and adding subtle sound dampening, resulting in a comfortable and satisfying keystroke.

Is the Kronos60 compatible with popular keyboard customization software?

Yes, the PCB is fully compatible with QMK and VIA firmware, allowing advanced programming and customization of keymaps, layers, and lighting effects to tailor the keyboard to your preferences.

What layout does the Kronos60 support?

The keyboard kit supports a 60% layout, which is a compact and efficient form factor that includes the alphanumeric keys and essential modifiers, making it ideal for users who want a minimal yet functional keyboard.

What is the typing angle and height of the Kronos60 keyboard?

The Kronos60 offers a typing angle of 6.8 degrees and a front height of 17.4mm. This ergonomic design helps reduce wrist strain and provides a comfortable hand position during extended typing sessions.

Does the keyboard come with a switch plate, and what is it made of?

Yes, the Kronos60 includes an anodized black aluminum switch plate. This plate adds rigidity to the build and ensures stable switch mounting, contributing to a satisfying typing feel and sound profile.

What unique design elements does the Kronos60 feature?

Inspired by the Greek deity Kronos and the planet Saturn, the keyboard showcases subtle engravings reminiscent of Galileo’s early sketches of Saturn from the early 17th century. This thematic design adds a touch of elegance and story to the keyboard’s aesthetic.

Is assembling the Kronos60 keyboard kit difficult for beginners?

The kit is designed for users comfortable with soldering, as the PCB requires soldering for switch installation. However, comprehensive components and clear assembly instructions are provided to guide you through the build process.

Product Description

The keebscape.co Keebscape Kronos60 is a 60% custom mechanical keyboard kit designed for hobbyists who want a compact, visually distinctive board with hot-swappable switches. It suits users comfortable with soldering and assembling their own keyboard, and those interested in a unique polycarbonate case with integrated lighting effects. It is less ideal for users seeking a fully assembled or wireless keyboard.

Key Features

Hot-swappable PCB allows easy switch changes without desoldering, supporting customization and experimentation.
O-ring mounted design uses 50A durometer O-rings to reduce typing noise and soften keypresses.
RGB underglow lighting diffuses through the frosted polycarbonate case, providing subtle illumination around the keyboard.
Includes a unified C5 daughterboard for flexible connectivity and modularity.

Build Quality

Single-piece frosted polycarbonate chassis offers a lightweight but durable frame with a smooth, diffused light effect.
Internal brass weight adds stability and heft, improving typing steadiness on the desk.
Anodized black aluminum switch plate enhances rigidity and supports switch mounting.
Assembly requires soldering, as the PCB is not fully pre-assembled.

Typing Experience

O-ring mounting softens keystrokes and reduces bottom-out noise, benefiting quieter typing environments.
6.8-degree typing angle and 17.4mm front height provide a moderate incline for ergonomic comfort.
Sound profile is influenced by the polycarbonate case and brass weight, likely producing a balanced acoustic signature.

Compatibility

Supports standard 60% layouts compatible with QMK and VIA firmware for extensive key remapping and macro programming.
Wired connection via JST cables; no wireless options available.
Designed by Gondolindrim, the PCB includes gold pads for durability and reliable switch contacts.

Trade-offs

Requires soldering skills, which may deter beginners or those seeking plug-and-play solutions.
No wireless or Bluetooth connectivity limits portability and multi-device use.
Limited to 60% layout, which may not suit users needing dedicated function or navigation keys.
