Product Description

The HMX TREX Linear is a budget-friendly linear switch suited for users who want a smooth, consistent keystroke without tactile feedback. It fits well for typists and gamers who prefer quiet, straightforward key presses with moderate resistance. The switch offers a familiar feel similar to earlier HMX models, making it a practical choice for those seeking reliable performance without premium cost.

Feel & Sound

  • Provides a smooth, linear keystroke with no tactile bump or click, supporting fast and uninterrupted typing or gaming.
  • Sound profile is relatively quiet with a soft bottom-out, suitable for office or shared environments.
  • Similar in feel to original HMX Hyacinth V2 and Cloud switches, offering a known typing experience.

Actuation Characteristics

  • Moderate operating force around 45g, balancing responsiveness and fatigue for extended use.
  • Pre-travel of 1.8mm and total travel near 3.6mm provide a standard key travel distance common in many keyboards.
  • Bottom-out force slightly higher than actuation force, giving a firm but not harsh end press.

Build Quality

  • Uses durable materials: POM stem for smooth movement, polycarbonate top housing, and PA66 bottom housing for stability.
  • Spring is a single-stage KOS type, contributing to consistent force throughout the press.
  • Factory lubed with thin coats on stem legs and sliders, plus dry film on spring and leaf, reducing initial scratchiness and noise.

Trade-offs

  • Being a budget switch, it may lack some refinement found in higher-end models, though factory lube helps mitigate roughness.
  • Unknown long-term durability and potential for spring ping or wobble due to limited data.
  • Less ideal if tactile or clicky feedback is preferred.
