A hot-swap QMK keyboard gives you the best of both worlds: tool-free switch changes and full firmware programmability. Swap between linear, tactile, and clicky switches while keeping your custom key maps, layers, and macros. Many QMK hot-swap boards also support VIA and Vial for real-time graphical configuration.
Hot-swap sockets use spring-loaded contacts that grip switch pins when inserted and release them when pulled out. This eliminates the need for soldering. Most modern hot-swap sockets support both 3-pin and 5-pin MX-style switches. To swap switches, use a switch puller to remove the old ones and press new switches firmly into the sockets.

When buying a hot-swap keyboard, 5-pin support is preferred.
