Product Description

The Leopold FC980MBT is a full-size mechanical keyboard with a compact 1800 layout, suited for users who want a space-saving design without losing key functionality. It fits well for office typists or general users who value reliable Cherry MX switches and need flexible connectivity options. It offers both wired USB-C and Bluetooth 5.1 wireless modes, making it adaptable for desktop and mobile use.

Key Features

  • Dual connectivity with USB-C wired and Bluetooth 5.1 wireless allows seamless switching between devices or setups.
  • 1.5mm thick PBT double-shot keycaps provide durable legends that resist wear and maintain clarity over time.
  • Dip switches enable some key function customization, useful for users who want to remap specific keys without software.
  • Three-way cord channel offers flexible cable routing for a cleaner desk setup.

Build Quality

  • Plastic top and bottom case keep the keyboard lightweight but may feel less solid compared to metal cases.
  • Plate-mounted Cherry MX switches contribute to a stable and consistent typing feel.
  • ANSI layout with US QWERTY is standard and widely supported.

Typing Experience

  • Choice of Cherry MX switch types (Brown, Blue, Red, Black, Silent Red) lets users select tactile, clicky, or linear feedback based on preference.
  • Non-hotswappable switches mean switch replacement requires soldering, limiting easy customization.
  • Keycaps’ PBT material reduces shine and provides a textured feel.

Connectivity

  • Bluetooth 5.1 wireless mode runs on 2 AAA batteries, included, allowing portable use without cables.
  • Wired USB-C connection supports stable, low-latency input for gaming or work.

Compatibility

  • Compatible with Windows, Mac, and Linux systems, suitable for multi-platform users.
  • Logical US QWERTY layout ensures broad software and hardware support.

Trade-offs

  • No multimedia keys may limit quick access to media controls for some users.
  • Absence of built-in audio or microphone ports reduces peripheral integration.
  • Plastic case and lack of hotswap limit upgrade potential and may feel less premium.
