Varmilo APT108

The Varmilo APT108 Moonlight is a full-size mechanical keyboard designed for users who want flexible connectivity and easy switch customization. It suits typists and general users who value a traditional layout with modern wireless options and hot-swappable switches. The keyboard offers multiple connection modes and sound absorption features, making it a practical choice for both office and home use.

Key Features

• Full-size ANSI layout with 108 keys, including dedicated multimedia keys for quick access to common functions.
• Hot-swappable MX-compatible switches allow users to change switches without soldering, supporting customization and maintenance.
• Programmable via Varmilo’s web application, enabling preset multimedia key combinations and some level of key remapping.
• Three connection options: wired USB-C, Bluetooth 5.1, and 2.4 GHz wireless, offering flexibility depending on user environment and device compatibility.
• Polling rates vary by connection: 1000 Hz wired, 250 Hz 2.4 GHz wireless, and 133 Hz Bluetooth, which may affect input responsiveness depending on mode.

Build and Typing Experience

• Plate-mounted switches provide a stable typing feel preferred by many mechanical keyboard users.
• Double-layer silicone sound absorption reduces typing noise, useful in quiet settings.
• Thick dye-sublimated PBT keycaps resist shine and wear, offering durability and a matte texture.
• Two-step adjustable kickstands allow users to set typing angles for comfort.
• Three-way cord channel lets the wired connection exit from left, right, or center, improving desk cable management.

Connectivity and Compatibility

• Supports Windows, macOS, and Linux, covering most desktop environments.
• Wired connection uses USB-C to USB-A, common and widely compatible.
• Wireless options provide convenience but come with lower polling rates, which may impact responsiveness for fast typists or gamers.

Trade-offs

• Polling rate drops significantly in wireless modes, which may be noticeable for users needing low latency.
• Does not support QMK or VIA firmware, limiting advanced custom keymapping beyond the vendor’s web app.
• North-facing switch stems may limit compatibility with some keycap sets designed for south-facing stems.
• Keyboard is not low profile, so it may feel bulky or less portable compared to slimmer models.
