Looking for a split spacebar keyboard? Browse every mechanical keyboard with a split space bar in one place. Find boards that divide the spacebar into multiple programmable segments for improved ergonomics and added functionality.
Our database tracks every split spacebar mechanical keyboard currently on the market. Filter by layout size, switch type, and price to find your ideal board with a divided spacebar. Split spacebar options are available across Alice, ortholinear, and standard layouts from various custom keyboard designers.
A split spacebar divides the standard spacebar into two or three independently functioning keys. The most common split uses a 2.25u left space and a 2.75u right space. This gives each thumb its own key to press, and the non-dominant thumb's segment can be remapped to backspace, enter, or a layer toggle for faster typing.
Most typists only use one thumb for the spacebar, leaving the other idle. A split space bar lets you assign backspace or a layer key to your unused thumb, eliminating the reach to the traditional backspace position. This reduces finger travel and can noticeably improve typing speed once you build the muscle memory.
Programmers benefit from split spacebars by mapping frequently used keys like backspace, enter, or layer toggles to the extra thumb segments. Combined with QMK layers, a split spacebar effectively adds a new modifier that your thumbs can access without leaving the home row. This is especially powerful on compact layouts where every key counts.
The Alice layout naturally incorporates a split spacebar as part of its ergonomic design. The angled split places each spacebar segment under the corresponding thumb at a comfortable angle. Other ergonomic layouts like ortholinear and columnar stagger boards also commonly feature split spacebars for maximum thumb utilization.
Split spacebar keycaps require specific sizes that differ from standard spacebars. Common split sizes include 2.25u and 2.75u, though some boards use 2u or 3u segments. Many modern keycap sets include split spacebar keys, but always check the compatibility kit before purchasing. Blank or novelty spacebar keys in the right sizes also work.
